Nigerian Scientist Dr. Samuel Achilefu Invents Infrared Goggles That Let Surgeons See Cancer Cells in Real Time

Meet Dr. Samuel Achilefu, a Nigerian Radiologist who invented high-tech infrared goggles which enable surgeons to see cancer cells during surgery.

Before his invention, it was difficult for cancer surgeons to 100% see every cancer cell.

Surgeons had to wait for lab results to know if they removed every tumor.

His infrared, fluorescence-guided goggles allow surgeons to see glowing cancer cells in real time.

Dr. Achilefu's devices greatly improving precision, reducing patient trauma, and reducing the need for follow-up surgeries.

He has over 300 published papers and over 70 medical patents in the United States.

He was born in Obingwa, Nigeria.

He has a PhD in molecular physical and materials chemistry followed by postdoctoral training in oxygen transport systems at Oxford University.
