.....But what pactually is the meaning of Ẹwú Niwinrin? Let's talk...

One major phrase in the Oríkì of Ikire people is calling them "Omo  Ẹwú níwìnrin " and it is a proud epithet of all indigens of ikire township. But what is the meaning of Ewu Niwinrin and how did it found its way to become part of ikire identity?

The name is dated back to the beginning.  Akinrere the founder of the town was a Prince from Ile Ife, while his mother was a trader from Iwere Ile, a town currently in Ondo State.

The Word Ewu was actually a nickname of Akinrere's mother due to her physical look. Originally, Ewu is another yoruba word for Okete (bushrat)

So the popular phrase in the otiki, "Ikire ọmọ Ẹwú nínwìnrín" was actually "Ọmọ Ẹwú Ní Ìwéré". It was the iwere that was later shortened and adapted to become  Ni'winrin.
