Official expulsions of Jews (by order of the official authority)

(This post is written strictly in accordance with historical documents and is intended for educational purposes.)

~1200 BCE: Exodus from Egypt.

474 BCE: Unsuccessful attempt to expel Jews from the Achaemenid Empire by Aman. Culminated in his execution and the Jewish people coming to power whilst Artaxerxes I retained formal authority. Aman's personal animosity was the formal cause.

19 AD: Roman Emperor Tiberius, advised by the Prefect of the Praetorian Guard Sejanus, directed the closure of synagogues and sent 4000 young Jews to military service on the island of Sardinia. Following Sejanus' execution in 30 or 31 AD, they were permitted to return and the synagogues were reopened.

50 AD: Expulsion from Rome by Emperor Claudius.

414 AD: Under Patriarch Cyril, Jews were expelled from Alexandria.

7th Century: Expulsion from Arabia by Muhammad. Modern Islam continues to marginalize Jews where it has sufficient influence.

613 AD: All Spanish Jews refusing to convert to Christianity were compelled to leave the country by King Sisebut's order. They were reinstated in the 620s, and then expelled again in 638.

1113 AD: Expulsion from Rus by Vladimir Monomakh, who declared, "Now expel Jews from Russian land with all their property, never accept them. If they secretly enter, they are freely killed and plundered." This followed a significant Jewish pogrom, as the population protested against Jewish oppression.

1171 AD: Partial expulsion of Jews from Bologna and Rome, corroborated by Christian and Jewish sources.

1182 AD: King Philip II of France decreed all Jews' expulsion from France and the confiscation of their property. Most refugees found sanctuary in neighboring domains like the County of Champagne, the Kingdom of Provence, the County of Vennessen, and other places.

1287 AD: Pogrom in Bern, Switzerland. In 1290, expulsion followed.

1290 AD: Expulsion from England by King Edward I. Official reason: usury. Yet, such a reason cannot justify the expulsion of a whole nation – something else must have been in play.

1306 AD: King Philip IV of France ordered Jew expulsion from France and confiscation of their property. Expulsion also occurred in Lorraine, Savoy, Dauphiné, Franche-Comté. Most Jews moved to southern provinces not under royal influence. On July 28, 1315, Louis X permitted Jews to return to France on the condition of paying a large ransom.

1320 AD: Decree for expulsion of Jews from Rome. Jewish delegates led by a member of the renowned Roman-Jewish family, Kalonimus, succeeded in revoking the decree. However, some Jews were expelled before the new order was received.

1348 AD: Recurrent expulsion from Switzerland. In subsequent years, Jews were forbidden from residing in Basel (1397), Bern (1427), Fribourg (1428), Zürich (1436), Schaffhausen (1475), Geneva (1490), Thurgau (1494), and Lausanne (late 15th century). Exceptions were made for doctors in isolated cases.

1349 AD: First expulsion of Jews from Hungary. Jews were exiled again in 1360 but were allowed to return (albeit with restrictions) in 1364.

1394 AD: King Charles VI of France again forbade Jews from living in France. Jews fled once more to southern provinces. By the end of the 15th century, these lands joined the royal domain, and Jews were expelled from there as well. After this, there were no Jews in France for three centuries.

Late 13th - 14th Centuries: Numerous local expulsions of Jews from various German principalities.

1421 AD: On the orders of Albrecht V, all Jews in Austria were arrested. 270 individuals were burned at the stake, accused of desecrating the Eucharist in Enns. The rest, except those who agreed to convert, were expelled, their property confiscated.

1477 AD: René II, Duke of Lorraine, expelled Jews from the province.

1487 AD: Municipal councils of Lisbon and other cities passed resolutions for expelling Jews. However, King John II revoked these resolutions.

1492 AD: Jews expelled from Spain by Isabella I and Ferdinand II ("Alhambra Decree"), and also from the Island of Sicily by Ferdinand II.

1495 AD: Jews expelled from Florence and Lithuania (property confiscated). In 1501, Jews were allowed to return and even had confiscated property returned.
December 1496 AD: King Manuel I decreed expulsion of Jews from Portugal and mandatory baptism for all children. 20,000 Jews left, the remainder forcibly baptized.
Persecution and pogroms persisted, despite the "protective" decree by the King in May 1497.

1525 AD: Jews expelled from Warsaw.

1530 - 1584 AD: Under Ivan the Terrible, Jews were forbidden to stay in the country. This ban was not strictly enforced after his rule.

1549 AD: Decree signed for the expulsion of Jews from Austria. However, the decree wasn't fully implemented, and a part of the Jewish population remained. In Lower Austria (1572), under Maximilian II, a similar expulsion decree was also not enforced.

1570 AD: Expulsion from Germany (Margraviate of Brandenburg).

23 April 1615 AD: Louis XIII issued a decree of Jewish expulsion from France within a month upon pain of death. Jews were forbidden not only to live in France but also in its colonies.

1622 AD: Expulsion from Switzerland.

1647 AD: The English Revolution began. In 1657, Oliver Cromwell lifted the ban on Jewish residency.

1669 AD: The Imperial decree signed for Jewish expulsion from Vienna, Lower and Upper Austria. In Fall of 1669, 1600 Jews were expelled. In 1670, the rest, including the wealthiest viennese Jews, were expelled.

1727 AD: Expulsion from Russia by Empress Catherine I.

1742 AD: Expulsion from Russia by Empress Elizabeth Petrovna.

1789 AD: The French Revolution began, leading Jews to power in France, and Anti-Semitism was banned.

13 April 1835 AD: A decree to the Senate was published that allowed Jews to settle in 6 western provinces and two areas freely, in 10 provinces with significant restrictions (e.g., forbidden to live in provincial cities), in other places - settlement was prohibited - "Pale of Settlement".

1870s AD: About 30,000 Russian Jews fled to the United States, escaping persecution. The pace of emigration quickly accelerated from 1881 to 1900 with another 600,000 Jews arriving in the U.S. Jews fleeing Russia were forbidden from returning. Jewish migration to Great Britain was halted by the "Aliens Immigration Act" in 1905.

3 May 1882 AD: The so-called "May Laws" were introduced. They repealed some of the previous norms permitted under Alexander II, allowing certain categories of Jews to live outside the Pale of Settlement. This led to another Jewish expulsion from large cities. Within the Pale of Settlement, Jews were prohibited from settling, leasing, and acquiring property outside towns and shtetls.

1917 AD: Revolution in Russia. Complete takeover of power by Jews, anti-Semitism was banned.

1930s AD: Expulsion from Germany

1948 - 2000 AD: Jewish expulsion from Muslim countries (Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen, and Aden).

The list above includes only official expulsions carried out by official power. Regular pogroms, often unofficially supported by the authorities, are simply impossible to count - their number is vast. This list does not claim to be complete or absolutely accurate.
