Ogume.jpg

Ogume is a fascinating community made up of seven villages located in Ndokwa West LGA, Delta State, Nigeria. These villages are Ogbe Ogume, Ogbagu, Ogbe_ole, Utue, Igbe, Obodo ugwa, and Umuchime. The community has a rich history, with origins linked to the ancient Benin Kingdom. This connection has earned it the nickname "OGUME IDU," meaning "Ogume from Edo."

Over time, the people of Ogume migrated from Benin, in present-day Edo State, forming distinct villages while sharing cultural ties with the Igala groups. The community is known for its vibrant traditions, including the Nduku,Ikenga and other festivals, which celebrate its ancestral heritage and spiritual practices.

Key aspects of Ogume's origin and identity include:

-Benin Connection: The founding populations of Ogume can be traced back to the Benin Kingdom, with migrations occurring between the 15th and 17th centuries.

-*Igala Links*: Ogume has connections to the Igala people, with some clans having relatives in Igala areas like Onya.

-Cultural Roots: The community's identity is deeply rooted in ancestral customs, highlighted by festivals such as:
-Nduku Festival: A major event celebrating heritage with music, masquerades, and community pride.
-Ikenga Festival: Held annually in August or September, where villagers demonstrate spiritual powers, showcasing ancestral protection and traditional rites.

-Leadership: Ogume has traditional leadership, with figures like the Paramount Leader of the Royal Priesthood playing key cultural roles and other age grades governing the community.

Ogume is also known for its strong spiritual and communal life, centered around ancient festivals. The community is reputed for its spiritual prowess and possession of magical powers, believed to offer protection and prosperity. Many young and old people flock to the village to seek these powers for prosperity and protection, which they say work marvelously.

While these spiritual practices are common in the Ukwani ethnic group, Ogume is considered particularly strong, having won many intercommunity conflicts.
