Core Virtues & Concepts:
  • Ren (仁) (Humaneness/Benevolence): The highest virtue, emphasizing empathy, compassion, and treating others with humanity.
  • Li (禮) (Propriety/Ritual): Proper conduct, etiquette, and adherence to traditions that structure social life.
  • Yi (義) (Righteousness): The moral disposition to do good and act morally.
  • Xiao (孝) (Filial Piety): Respect, obedience, and care for parents and elders, seen as the root of virtue.
  • Xin (信) (Trustworthiness/Integrity): Honesty and faithfulness in all dealings.
  • Zhi (智) (Wisdom): Moral understanding and discernment, allowing one to know what is right.
Key Principles for Society:
  • The Five Relationships: Defines social harmony through specific hierarchical roles (ruler-subject, parent-child, husband-wife, elder-younger sibling, friend-friend).
  • Rectification of Names (正名): Ensuring words and titles match reality, so people act according to their defined roles.
  • Cultivation of the Self: Personal development through education and self-examination to become a Chun Tzu (superior person).
  • Doctrine of the Mean (中庸): Striving for balance and moderation in all things, avoiding extremes.
Goal:
To create a stable, harmonious, and virtuous society by cultivating moral individuals who understand and fulfill their duties within their relationships, leading to a well-ordered world.
