It's not about putting CCTV in your premises but ensuring that it does not land you in trouble.

These are what you should know and do before mounting CCTV anywhere:

1. CCTV is not for decorations. You must have a valid and justifiable reason for installing CCTV, such as security, crímé prevention, or safety.

2. You must put a sign that can be clearly seen stating that "CCTV surveillance is in operation in this premises".

This notice help inform the public and protect their right to privacy which is guaranteed by the Constitution.

It helps people who come around that premises to be alert and avoid doing some personal things so they are not watched.

You can face criminal charges for not putting the notice where there is CCTV.

3. Do not put CCTV in a room, bathroom or offices occupied by others without informing them and getting their consent. The right to privacy is a right not to be joked with.

4. Be careful of whom you pay for installation of your CCTV because your installer will still have access to the CCTV footage and can view everything that happens where the CCTV was installed.

Imagine seeing on social media, the CCTV footage of where you were having séx and you are wondering who hacked your CCTV. Hey, your installer has control!

Imagine you quietly came home with some money and boom, arméd róbbérs came and went straight to where you kept the money to get it. How did they know the exact location?

5. To prevent the installer from having control after installation, tell the installer to give you the default login details and password he used for installing it.

6. Ask him to show you how to log in and change the default details.

7. Once he has shown you, immediately change the log in details and the installer will not be able to access your CCTV footage again.

8. Request that the installer must not have any access codes, whether remote, admin or backup codes.

Make sure the installer deletes the account set up from his device before he leaves your presence.

9. Lastly, try to sign an agreement with the installer and agree on all these privacy issues before installation. If he refuses, find another installer.
