1️⃣ Directive from the NCC
On June 29, 2025 (just a few days ago), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) issued a directive to all telecom companies (MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile, etc.) to suspend all new SIM registrations, swaps, and upgrades.

2️⃣ Reason for the suspension
It is said that there were issues related to data security, especially concerning the NIN-SIM linkage (i.e., linking the National Identification Number to SIM cards).

There were also discovered errors and inconsistencies in the registration process and management of users' data.

This move is part of the government's efforts to ensure that all data being used is accurate and verified, in order to prevent the use of SIMs for cybercrime, fraud, and other security threats.

3️⃣ When will the services resume?
No specific date has been announced yet, but the NCC says they are working with the telecom operators to fix the system before allowing registration and other suspended services to resume.

Some reports say that SIM registration might resume within two to three weeks once corrections are completed.

🛑 What does this mean for the public?
✅ You cannot buy a new SIM.
✅ You cannot do a SIM swap (e.g., if your SIM is damaged or lost).
✅ You cannot do an upgrade (e.g., switching to eSIM or 4G/5G).
✅ Those who already have SIM cards can continue using them as usual.
