Agunese-Mmaku community protests

THE Agunese-Mmaku community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State has expressed concern Over a looming potential breakdown of law and order as a result of constant police harassment, arrest, and detention of community members on "trumped-up allegations." The community, through the Agunese-Mmaku Development Union, appealed to the police high command under the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order the immediate release of those being held at various police detention facilities and correctional facilities on such charges. Ina statement made available to South East PUNCH on Monday in Enugu, which was signed by Mr Okike Simeon, and Okolo Norbert Abba-Nebo; the President-General and Secretary-General of AMDU, respectively, the community condemned the arrest of Mr Vincent Okafor, a Lagos-based senior lawyer, and two others, who were recently arraigned and remanded in Nigerian Correctional Service custodian centre by the police for allegedly promoting local war in his hometown, Agunese Mmaku. Fake Job Syndicate smashed in Igwuruta,16 victs rescued
THE Rivers State Police Command said its men smashed a fake job syndicate and rescued 16 persons including 13 females who lost various sums of money to the gang in Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state. The police said the suspect and his accomplice posed as a company worker and potential employer to scam unsuspecting job seekers, saying the fraudsters had already disposed their victims of huge sums ranging from N650, 000 to N850,000.00 each for a non-existent job in an oil and gas firm. The state Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, disclosed this at a news bricfing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. Disu said the syndicate was busted when operatives responded to a distress call by concerned residents who suspected hostage-taking, The CP stated, "On August 29, 2024, at about 3 pm, operatives of the Rivers State Police Command attached to the Octopus Strike Force, acting on a credible piece of information about a possible hostage situation in a compound at Igwuruta. "The operatives swung into action and arrested a suspect, Chukwudi Okoli (m), who posed as a staff member of a company, Qjoseansel International Global Limited. "During the operation, Amiye Joseph and 15 other victims comprising 13 males and two were rescued and led to the station. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the unsuspecting victims had each paid monetary sums ranging from N650,000 to N850,o00 each to the phoney Company with vain assurance that they would be given jobs within the oil/gas sector and receive payment in US dollars. Man arrested for raping mentally unstable housewife in Owode Ogun State
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man named Tahiru Hamidu for allegedly engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a mentally unstable married woman (name withheld) in the Owode community, located in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state. The spokesperson for the state police command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest to our correspondent on Tuesday. PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect allegedly exploited the survivor's condition toengage in non-consensual sexual intercourse on multiple before he was the suspect apprehended by the men of the Owode EgbaDivision on September 12, 2024. The suspect was also accused of threatening to murder the survivor's brother-in-law, known only as Shofolahan, if he did not permit him to continue raping his brother's wife. On one occasion, Hamidu, a suspect from Northern Nigeria, was accused of luring the survivor to a cassava plantation, where he allegedly raped her multiple times before releasing her. Odutola said, "The survivor is mentally incapacitated brother-in-law who reported the case claims that the suspect threatened to kill him to prevent him from stopping crimes. The suspect is accuse of repeatedly engaging in sexal acts with the survivor. "The suspect is also accused of luring the survVOr to a cassava plantation in the community where he allegedly engaged in non-consensual sexual intercourse with her repeatedly. "He began threatening the brother-in-law, warning him to stop preventing him from having sexual intercourse with the survivor and demanding that he hand her over to him.j Odutola added that the investigation into the crime was ongoing following the suspect's arrest. Usman Bube was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his pregnant neighbour's wife at the Ogatalo Fulani Camp in the Imala area of the state. The suspect allegedy broke into his neighbour's apartment, where he found the pregant woman sleeping, and attempted to commit the crime, knowing that her husband, Muhammed Awwalu, had travelled out of the community, leaving his wife alone in the apartment UWhen the suspect's repeated attempts to forcefuly engage in unlawful sexual intercourse with the woman failed, he allegedly pulled out a knife and tried to silence and overpower him. #26
Police recover guns, ransom from
suspected kidnappers Dele Ogunyemi in Warri, Delta PERATIVES of the Delta State Police Command have recovered one single barrel gun, three locally made cut-to- size guns, the sum of N450,000 being ransom money, two POS machines, and wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp from suspected kidnappers in their hideouts in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state. This was contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, SP Bright Edafe, in Warri on Tuesday. The statement noted that on September 12, 2024, at about 0130hrs, a crack squad attached to the Area Command, Ughelli, while acting on a tip-of, stormed a brothel cum criminal hideout in Ewu town Ughelli South LGA and arrested five suspected kidnappers. The suspects were named Dominic Uweru alias Ovwolo (48), Isaac Oghenerukevwe alias Plug (34), Oviri Godstime (25), Junior Sunday and Efedeki Adjovo. During interrogations, all the suspects confessed to various armed robbery/kidnapping operations in Ughelli and its Delta PPRO, Edafe environs, including the kidnap of a 70-year-old woman (name withheld) who they kidnapped on September 8 and collected the sum of N7.9m the following day before her release. Meanwhile, the suspects are in police custody while investigation is ongoing. In another development, on September 9, at about 1330hrs, the anti-crime patrol team of the Aboh Police Division, while on a stop-and-search duty in Aboh town, intercepted one motorcycle conveying two occupants carrying a bag. While the occupants were being subjected to a routine search, one of them took to his heels and escaped but a total of 930 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were recovered in the bag. The police immediately arrested the other suspect, Anthony Godday. The PPRO stated that investigation is ongoing- Also, acting on credible information, operatives of Agbarho Police Station stormed the house of one Ovoke Enaike, aged 43 years, an indigene of Ovierie Ethiope East Local Government Area but resides in Ehwerhe Village, Agbarho. #27
One killed, another injured in Lagos auto crash
A yet-to-be-identifhed Aadult has been confirmed dead in an accident involving a container truck anda commercial Suzuki mini vehicle on the CMS bridge in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State. The incident was said to have occurred at about 6:15 am on Monday when the mini- vehicle was descending towards the Apogbon bridge in the community. The spokesperson for LASTMA, Taofiq Adebayo, in a statement obtained by PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, said the truck driver had temporarily halted the vehicle to address a mechanical malfunction when the Suzuki mini vehicle, reportedly travelling at an exXCessive speed, fatally struck him. The impact resulted in his immediate death. A female passenger in the Suzuki sustained severe eye injuries and was urgently transported to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for emergency medical treatment. "LASTMA personnel quickty to the responded coordinating efforts with officers from the Ebute-Ero Police Division, LASMABUS, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit," he stated. Kola Adebayo noted that the police promptly secured the scene, facilitated the removal of the deceased's remains, and supported LASTMA officers to ensure the seamless flow of traffic in the aftermath of the incident. Scene, According to him, the authority expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and strongly urged motorists to exercise heightened vigilance and adhere to traffic regulations, especially in densely congested areas. #28

Fire razes Lokoja phone market Kogi state
Properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed following a fire that gutted the GSM village around Kpata Market in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. Our correspondent gathered that the fire outbreak started in the early hours of Thursday due to a power upsurge. It was further learnt that shop owners could not salvage anything from the fire after it got out of control. One of the traders in the market, Muhammed Yahaya, who lost his goods to the fire lamented, "Somebody called me around 5:30 am today that the market is on fire. On getting there, many shops have already been burnt down. So, we tried to look at the actual cause of the fire.
